Dock Street’s prodigal sons have returned, and they intend to spread Xmas cheer. For the first time in three years, Monty, Gravy, Debo, and Money are going to grace Bay Street with their presence. “I have always felt that the Xmas show was my actual Xmas every year and something has been missing over the past years that we skipped it.” said frontman Jay Miller via Facebook Event Invite “But now Xmas is back!! And we’re bringing our friends to celebrate with us.”

Of those friends returning to their checkerboard stomping ground are local favorites Quantice Never Crashed who themselves have been missing the past few years. QNC guitarist John Ratel has played the DS stage recently,  performing in Alt-Rock act New Moon Jellies who recently released an LP called Vicious Wishes, but this will be the first time Quantice has played in quite a long time. Joining Monty Love and QNC in their triumphant returns are current DS mainstays Sink You Fool, Kids Carry Germs, Racing Exit 13, and smart-funny rockers Les Vinyl.

Admission for the event is $10 unless you’re wielding a show flier, in which case it’s $6. Doors open at 7pm and the lineup of bands is as follows:

“We are raising money so we can have a Christmas party for the families of the soldiers in the battalion, especially for the kids of the deployed soldiers.” said Den of Thieves drummer Sean McCann, who has been diligent getting the word out for the show.

Local bands The Ghost Armada and Den of Thieves will be playing their last ever shows here at Dock Street, along with local staples On 12 Systems and The Headlocks.

On October 24th 2009, Jeff Enrage is throwing his annual Halloween party right here at Dock Street. The show will be headlined by Junkyard Luxury & Rise With The Fallen, and will feature a ladies only costume contest. (click to see photo)

It all started, humbly enough, in the back of a cafe. Three freinds had the idea to start a band; and that chance transaction spawned Cobalt Sky. Now, four members strong, Nick DePalo (Vocals/Guitar), Ricky Abolt (Guitar/Vocals), Nick Colella (Bass), Paulie Pipitone (Drums), the band has already released its first EP, fondly christened the “London LP,” after the first song the band ever wrote. The quartet has quickly begun to gain momentum in the music scene, playing the JCC Rockfest 2009, a set in the SI Mall at Hot Topic’s “Local Static.”

However, the crowning achievement for the band, thusfar in their fledgling career, is undoubtedly their invitation to the MTV VMA Best Breakout New York City Contest.

For most Staten Island twenty-somethings, still in the infancy of their bar exploring days, it is the bar that your parents used to go to when they were beginning to explore Staten Island’s nightlife. Now, the lost gem of the nightlife of yesteryear, the famed “Redspot,” is setting out to prove that with a little revamping, and the power of nostalgia, no former hot spot is immune to revival.

The proprietor of the former “Redspot,” Steve Cattone, in collaborative efforts with Edgewater Hall owner and proprietor, Ettore Mazzei, has ressurected the “Redspot” and established a new home for the so-called “beatnik bar,” as dubbed by Mr. Cottone, behind Dock Street Bar And Grill.

So what can you expect of the new and improved Redspot? Well, owner Steve Cottone has designed the second generation Redspot much in the same style as the first. Cottone has re-implemented his pop-surrealist designs, the same designs that made the new venue’s predecessor vaguely reminiscent of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.

The twist is that the new Redspot is an outdoor lounge. There is no live music, however, familiar bohemian sounds of Redspot past softly permiate the the venue and fade into background ambience.

After all the Redspot “was the place to be for the alternaitve crowd,” as stated by Steve Cottone, up until the bar’s closing seventeen years ago in 1992.

And, as is the case this Saturday, the Redspot frequently hosts “Backyard Barbeques.” This week’s menu features beers and burgers for dinner, served with a little slice of history for dessert.
