Some bands fit into their niche in the musical world like a glove. Others make a hard-left and rebel against their perceived type. The Seconds land somewhere in that sweet middle spot.

To many different people, The Seconds could be many different things.

Some might hear the everyman musical daydreams of Bruce Springsteen, while others a tinge of Country, while still others might detect an 80’s Underground-Replacements-by-way-of-New-Wave vibe.

All of those people would be right.

On their upcoming debut full-length “Slip Away,” the title track itself is a prime example of this band’s ability to seamlessly adhere musical convergence with a continual flow of familiarity. Bringing you into their world expecting one thing and then twisting it just enough to satisfy you in ways similar bands wouldn’t bother to try, yet never overcooking any of their original formula.

The Seconds consist of local singer/songwriter The John on vocals and acoustic guitar, Joe Pecora on electric guitar, Joe Patches on drums and glockenspiel, and Mike McDonnell on Bass.

The extremely detailed and lush production was handled by Pecora at his own Red Room Studio on Forest ave. An on-the-rise production facility created by him and quickly rising in stature as other local acts such as the Wahoo Skiffle Crazies and Les Vinyl have recently had professional-grade albums produced, mixed, and mastered there, all by the same guy.

On their new release, no moment is wasted. Everyone gets their time to shine and the production captures all of it in just the right doses.

The Seconds are a band quickly rising to the top and you’d be wise to follow them in the coming weeks when their debut album is released for the masses to finally get a sharp first look at The Seconds.

Kilgore Trout Is Dead has been a staple on the SI music scene for a few years now.

With his original-brand of electronics meshed with live ukulele instrumentation all wrapped-up in, literally, a briefcase. Kilgore Trout Is Dead has been mystifying the SI music scene just as much as he has been impressing it.

With a full-length album coming soon, one of SI’s top-bloggers, Pat Duffy of PTST, has been the only one truly hinting at how gloriously game-changing this album has the potential to be by posting the rough mix of the new album track “Leave Me Alone” no less than seven different times in the past half-year.

While I myself am a very avid reader of Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, I must admit it has taken me this long to catch on, but I’m glad I finally have and can now join Pat Duffy in sharing this track with you.

“Leave Me Alone” takes the composure and classical tones of “Song Cycle”-era Van Dyke Parks and mixes it with the raw, catalytic flow of Animal Collective. The production, on par with the quality of the song, while in this form un-mixed, shines in it’s slickness while allowing plenty of room for everything within it to breath and, more importantly, thrive.

Staten Island’s favorite Hip-Pop act return this spring with the CHIC PUNK 1 EP.

Dock Street’s prodigal sons have returned, and they intend to spread Xmas cheer. For the first time in three years, Monty, Gravy, Debo, and Money are going to grace Bay Street with their presence. “I have always felt that the Xmas show was my actual Xmas every year and something has been missing over the past years that we skipped it.” said frontman Jay Miller via Facebook Event Invite “But now Xmas is back!! And we’re bringing our friends to celebrate with us.”

Of those friends returning to their checkerboard stomping ground are local favorites Quantice Never Crashed who themselves have been missing the past few years. QNC guitarist John Ratel has played the DS stage recently,  performing in Alt-Rock act New Moon Jellies who recently released an LP called Vicious Wishes, but this will be the first time Quantice has played in quite a long time. Joining Monty Love and QNC in their triumphant returns are current DS mainstays Sink You Fool, Kids Carry Germs, Racing Exit 13, and smart-funny rockers Les Vinyl.

Admission for the event is $10 unless you’re wielding a show flier, in which case it’s $6. Doors open at 7pm and the lineup of bands is as follows:

The album which is slated to release later this week was produced by 4 Staten Island based producers. Mike Cash, J Glaze, Tekst (of The Higher Concept) and Mighty Owe shared producing duties for the 17 track release. b : the date on which Staten Island Ska/Punk quartet Sink You Fool! is releasing their new 4 song EP.

After over a month of promotion, the day is almost upon us! The Skanksgiving Day festivities at Dock Street begin on Friday November 27th with Sink You Fool! rocking the release of their EP ($10 cover). In a message to fans on their Myspace profile, Sink You Fool! guitarist/lead vocalist Jason Roschbach had the following to say:

“Hey guys this is Jason from Sink You Fool! As you already know, the Staten Island music scene has been kind of dead for a while considering the amount of people who went away to school and the amount of bands going on breaks because of it, us included. Sink You Fool has been recording a four song EP for the past 2 months that is done and waiting to be released to you guys.

On November 27th, 2009 we will be releasing this EP to you at our beloved Dock Street. The Bands playing this show are all bands that have been on break and haven’t been around for the past few months because of the little obstacle we call college.

Curious Volume, The Richmond Knights, and Kids Carry Germs are back along with many other amazing bands from all over New York are being amazing people and coming down to the Island to play this show for us and making the Sink You Fool Ep release show an amazing one.

Believe me when I say that on this day there is going to be one hell of a show we will be playing brand new never before heard Sink You Fool songs and our brand new EP filled with songs everyone has been waiting to hear will be available for only 2 bucks at any time during it.

Even if shows aren’t your “thing” and you don’t know the bands or really know the music we hope you all decide to come and have a great time anyway. I promise you it will be a hell of a show.”

If you’re anything like me, you completely missed out on the theatrical release of the only major motion picture sharing a name with our borough. Seeing how Staten Islanders as a whole have a tendency to ignore it’s own art and music scene, it’s not too far off to imagine that most of Staten Island slept on a film, not only about Staten Island… but actually called “Staten Island”!!

Released on August 5th 2009, Staten Island which was directed by James DeMonaco (Who wrote “The Negotiator” and “Assault on Precinct 13″) and stars Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Seymour Cassel. Dubbed as a different kind of Mafia movie, Staten Island was released and quickly discarded. (Possibly because of that very dubbing) Check out the trailer, which features some prominent SI locations.

(note: the film is called “Little New York” in some foreign releases)

One reviewer, Leslie Felperin of Variety, compared the film to Pulp Fiction and Sin City saying “All in all, despite a tangible sense of place stemming from the use of Staten Island and surrounding locations, the pic has a weirdly European vibe about it, by way of the Tarantino school of knowingness — rising perhaps from the over-ironic, slightly mocking chapter titles that introduce each section.” Perhaps it’s Staten Island’s fight against the bad reputation that caused this film to be swept under the rug, and perhaps it just isn’t very good. We can only really tell by checking the flick out for ourselves. I know I’d like to check it out, even tho i missed it in the theaters.
