Spotlight: Sarah Varon…

Sarah Varon

Most times, folks on many sides of the local music scene will miss out on new, up-and-coming talent because the talent in question remains without direction themselves, for the moment.

But in the case of local singer/songwriter Sarah Varon, that’s alright, even endearing.

Because while others have already become staples on the SI musical landscape, Varon has higher goals in mind.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being a local legend, but, let’s be honest, who wants to be the big fish in a small pond when you can stride to be the biggest fish in the sea?

So she waits.

Quietly working-on and refining her songs so that they may, someday soon, be ready for the bigger stage; Varon’s music is soft-spoken yet full of angst and passion akin to a young Fiona Apple.

Such is the case with a song like “Lie.”

“Lie,” in particular, showcases her wry sarcasm and passionate lyrics while veiling her emotions within a melody that would make Ingrid Michaelson blush.

“All that seemed to be was just to pass the time” Varon sings, in a prime example of love betrayed and articulated in the catchy song “Vessel.”

But that’s just the point: It’s all catchy stuff.

So much so, that upon first listen, you might fail to catch the fact that the words being spoken, more often than not, are melancholy odes to love gone awry.

With her reflective lyrics and seasoned guitar prowess, you’d be wise to catch Varon’s music before she figures out a way to spread her wings farther than just the North and South Shores.

i've had the pleasure of catching varon's set on a few occasions, and the experience moved me beyond my expectations each time. i've realized my pitiful humanity through her music, which is quite heavenly, indeed.
